The Halloween countdown begins!

What better way to kick off the Halloween than to start with some homegrown Irish horror movies.

We’ve scoured the internet to find some Irish treats & were quite shocked at how little horror we actually have to offer. So our list comprises of movies made in Ireland, made by Irish writers & directors, funded by the Irish film board and even feature Irish themes.

Some of these are amazing, some are terrible. Some are even just…meh! But what matters is they are Irish!

A Dark Song – 2016

A determined young woman and a damaged occultist risk their lives and souls to perform a dangerous ritual that will grant them what they want.

Beyond The Woods – 2018

A gathering of friends is thrown into chaos by the opening of a mysterious fiery sinkhole near their secluded holiday home.

Boy Eats Girl – 2005

A boy declares his love for his girlfriend, only to die the same night. He is brought back to life by his mother as a flesh-craving zombie, who sires more teen undead while trying to control his, er, appetite for his beloved.

The Canal – 2014

A depressed and stressed film archivist finds his sanity crumbling after he is given an old 16mm film reel with footage from a horrific murder that occurred in the early 1900’s.

Citadel – 2012

An agoraphobic father teams up with a renegade priest to save his daughter from the clutches of a gang of twisted feral children who committed an act of violence against his family years earlier.

Controra AKA House of Shadows – 2013

A couple inherits their family’s ancient Italian palazzo where sinister shadows from the past reappear.

The Cured – 2017

A disease that turns people into zombies has been cured. The once-infected zombies are discriminated against by society and their own families, which causes social issues to arise. This leads to militant government interference.

The Daisy Chain – 2008

A grieving couple move to a remote Irish village in the wake of their baby daughter’s death. They soon take in an orphaned autistic girl, only to become involved in a series of strange occurrences.

Darby O’Gill and the Little People

A wily old codger matches wits with the King of the Leprechauns and helps play matchmaker for his daughter and the strapping lad who has replaced him as caretaker.

Dark Touch – 2013

In a remote town in Ireland, eleven-year-old Niamh finds herself the sole survivor of a bloody massacre that killed her parents and younger brother. Suspecting a gang of homicidal vandals, the police ignore Niamh’s explanation that the house is the culprit. To help ease her trauma, dutiful neighbours Nat and Lucas take her in with the supervision of a social worker. Niamh has trouble finding peace with the wholesome and nurturing couple, and horrific danger continues to manifest.

An infection spreads from slaughtered animals to humans, which causes the dead to rise and feed on the living.

The Devils Doorway – 2018

In the fall of 1960, Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton were sent by the Vatican to investigate a miraculous event in an Irish home for ‘fallen women’, only to uncover something much more horrific.

Don’t Leave Home – 2018

An American artist’s obsession with a disturbing urban legend leads her to an investigation of the story’s origins at the crumbling estate of a reclusive painter in Ireland.

Extra Ordinary – 2019

Rose, a mostly sweet and lonely Irish driving instructor, must use her supernatural talents to save the daughter of Martin (also mostly sweet and lonely) from a washed-up rock star who is using her in a Satanic pact to reignite his fame.

Freakdog AKA Red Mist – 2008

After a prank goes awry and lands a hospital janitor in a coma, a group of doctors begin dying at the hands of the comatose patient who is extracting revenge through out-of-body experiences.

From The Dark – 2014

A couple on a trip through the Irish countryside find themselves hunted by a creature who only attacks at night.

Grabbers – 2012

When an island off the coast of Ireland is invaded by bloodsucking aliens, the heroes discover that getting drunk is the only way to survive.

The Green Marker Scare – 2012

Starting as an old-school sleuth story, young Noreen begins investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding her father’s death, uncovering a shocking and sinister conspiracy that has been wreaking havoc in her hometown for years.

A family who moved into a remote mill house in Ireland finds themselves in a fight for survival with demonic creatures living in the woods.

The Hole in the Ground – 2019

A single mother living in the Irish countryside with her son begins to suspect he may not be her son at all, and fears his increasingly disturbing behaviour is linked to a mysterious sinkhole in the forest behind their house.

In a small Midwestern town, a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down and destroy a supernatural killer while keeping his own inner demons at bay.

Legend of the Bog AKA Assault of Darkness – 2009

When a ‘bog body’ a 2000 year old murder victim preserved in a peat bog is disturbed by developers in rural Ireland, an archaeologist, a hunter and their helpers face the task of sending him back where he came from.

Let Us Prey – 2014

Held in a remote police station, a mysterious stranger takes over the minds and souls of everyone inside.

The Lodgers – 2017

1920, rural Ireland. Anglo Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. Portrait of a Zombie – 2012

When son, Billy, becomes a zombie the family chooses to take care of him in the home much to the chagrin of the neighbors and the local crime boss.

Rawhead Rex – 1986

An ancient creature called Rawhead is awakened from its slumber near an Irish village and goes on a rampage killing anyone in sight.

Sea Fever – 2019

The crew of a West of Ireland trawler, marooned at sea, struggle for their lives against a growing parasite in their water supply.

Shrooms -2017

A group of friends are stalked and murdered whilst looking for psilocybin mushrooms in the Irish woods.

Stitches – 2012

A clown comes back from the dead to haunt those who took his life during a fatal party mishap.

Tin Can Man – 2007

Recently dumped by his girlfriend for another man, working in a job he hates, things could be better for Peter. One night, while he is alone in his apartment, there is a knock at the door. His life will never be the same again.

The Turning – 2020

A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after their parents’ deaths. A modern take on Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw.”

Wake Wood – 2009

The parents of a girl who was killed by a savage dog are granted the opportunity to spend three days with their deceased daughter.

Without Name – 2016

Follows a land surveyor on an assignment to measure an ancient forest for a developer but soon loses his reason in a supernatural environment that has its own plans.
